EcoGEOS > Small Hydrogen City Car Will be Open Source | Ethical Investments
[Ethical Investments] The hydrogen fuel cell will only be 6kW and there will be electric motors in each wheel. A bank of ultracapacitors will take the place of a battery.

[Ethical Man blog] BBC - Ethical Man blog: The car is dead... long live the car: Lithium supplies are also relatively scarce, as no_la_bound says, and with Morales' nationalization of Bolivia's commodities companies and general suspicion of the West (especially the United States), it's debatable whether Bolivia would be able to supply enough lithium to meet demand.
[ClimateChangeCorp - Main] Clean energy R&D: The returns on investment - ClimateChangeCorp.com: There is just no framework for CCS at the moment, says Dr Simon Buckle, director of climate policy at Imperial Colleges Climate Institute. Bruce Jenkyn-Jones, director of investments at environmental investment firm Impax, adds: There is no question that governments have to pay for CCS.
[TreeHugger] GM Delivers Hydrogen Powered "Sequel" to Camp Pendleton: : TreeHugger: When you see that exhaust plume coming out of the back of the car in front of you this winter, think about the fact that it is from the combustion of hydrogen. The answer to your question: divert millions of tons of H2 from gasoline refining directly into the storage tanks of GM's new fuel cell powered vehicles.
[Tesla Leadership] Tesla Motors - Tesla Leadership: Assuming that the gasoline engine that the car uses for electricity production uses the space where typically an engine would go, and that the batteries and fuel tank are sharing the space typically a fuel tank would go, that is pretty impressive and I think that should demonstrate the potential of Lithium Polymer batteries to give the Tesla Roadster a longer driving distance per charge. The main downsides that I see are cost, as Lithium Ion batteries are more widely manufactured than Lithium Polymer batteries (given that the Tesla Roadster is for automobile enthusiasts this should not be a problem and could potentially make an extra fee for Lithium Polymer batteries an option) and weight, as placing batteries where there was previously air, would increase the weight of the car, increasing the amount of energy required to accelerate at the same speed.
[Technology Review Feed - arXiv blog] Technology Review: Assessing GM's Fuel Cell Strategy: Electricity is indeed the most effective method of propulsion and in any case either batteries or capacitors would be required in any efficiently propelled vehicle. A fuel cell is an effective way of producing Electro Motive Force but once produced it is essential to conserve this power by regeneration through the drive motors being used as generators when braking, downhill or overrun.
[The Speculist] The Speculist: All I Want for Christmas is a Sane Energy Policy: Zubrin's arguments seem basically sound to me, but they would be much more effective if he refrained from mis-stating the relative costs of hydrogen vs oil or ignoring the most cost effective mechanism for deploying the "hydrogen economy", ie: fuel cells and not IC engines. As I am sure neither he nor yourself is advocating pumping unrefined crude oil into our gas tanks, I notice a glaring lack of any comparrison of the actual cost of delivering gasoline to the pump (that includes exploration, pumping, refinement and transportation costs;

[Comments for Tesla Founders Blog] Focus Green « Tesla Founders Blog: Most proponents of hub motors count among their benefits the opportunity to eliminate friction brakes, depending on regenerative braking by the motors only. (They depend on eliminating the brakes, because the hub motor would go where the brakes go in a conventional wheel.) I worry a lot about how to stop the car if a motor or electronics fail.
[The Oil Drum - Discussions about Energy and Our Future] The Oil Drum | Khosla Responds: "Imagining the Future of Gasoline ...: Further if we did not have corn ethanol priming the pump, helping create a market for ethanol, getting the fuel infrastructure and FFV's lined up, I would not be investing in cellulosic ethanol as the cascade of distribution, market demand and infrastructure risks with the technology risk would make it too risky for me. In fact the corn ethanol investments we have made will make the cellulosic risk smaller as it is likely (but not guaranteed) that the initial cellulosic plants will be add-ons to today's corn ethanol plants, making them economically viable sooner.
