EcoGEOS > NACTs leave ethical investment to 'the market' « The Standard
[The Standard] If you are an Insider with complete knowledge, then you would know how ethical investing is already being carried out by some investors. I’m not sure just how they do it, I think by dropping more disgraceful ones on human rights bases such as below poverty line or no wages etc.

[Massachusetts Election 2010] Cynthia Creem faces Ethics Questions over Alimony Reform ...: As for alimony (aka child support in disguise or vica versa) a noble idea, but under IV-D funding which includes alimony as a state accountable cost through, the state benefits with undistributed and federal cost refunds but as we are now finding out these attorney scoundrels have been emptying the larders, declaring this as state revenue on the books when it actually belonged to individuals, investing in multimillion dollar retirement scams for themselves in commodity markets. Raiding every pot that previous generations thought we had saved up for, many died for, and many believed we had in real tangibles so that future generations could live in security.
[RealClearMarkets - Articles] Rehabilitating the Disreputable Eliot Spitzer: Those court victories stiffened the resolve of others Spitzer attempted to intimidate into settlements, notably the New York Stock Exchange's CEO, Dick Grasso, and AIG's long-time chairman, Hank Greenberg. Though Spitzer drove them both from office, a New York State Court of Appeals ultimately dismissed all claims by Spitzer against Grasso in a high-profile compensation case, while 2005 charges against Greenberg alleging fraudulent business practices were eventually dropped for lack of evidence.
[3quarksdaily] Humane Terror, Sacrificial Horror: Suicide Bombing and ...: Since Muslim militancy has arisen in the wake of such movements, “[it] derives much of its rhetorical charge by partaking of their effects.”[14] Adverting to the writings of philosopher Karl Jaspers, Devji maintains that sacrifice, though not political in any normative sense, “serves as an invitation to a politics of the future.”[15] For Jaspers, as for Devji, Gandhi is the principal exponent of modernitys sacrificial logic, even though his practice of it predated the Cold War. This logic, so Jaspers suggests, is suprapolitical because it is purposefully withdrawn from institutional politics and therefore also from political rationality.[16] Gandhian sacrifice was not only disinterested, but also outside “the chain of cause and effect that binds all political calculation” and stripped of all instrumentality.[17] It was the suffering of Gandhis body which became the focal point of an ethical investment by his followers and the condition for the possibility of a transformation in politics (from Crown rule to independence).
[The Gipsy Geek] Truth or Dare? « The Gipsy Geek: After the initial furore of the news they settle down, complacantly happy shopping at the big box store (that has razed the local forest), investing in the 401(k) which might contain shares of BP oil, dining in the restaurants that uses meat from some ruthless slaughterhouse, wearing clothes made by sweatshop workers….and then watching some reality or other tv show or computer game and forgetting about their woes. This is just an observation, not a value-judgment.
[Newstime Africa] America's Disgraceful Attempt to Suppress Africa's Stringent Anti ...: Any reason or excuse given to engage in such acts is merely done for the disgusting gratification some get from it. Uganda and Kenya must be commended for taking such drastic actions on gay and lesbians and urged to keep the momentum.
[Quantum field theory] Assistant Professor Lubos Motl's ingenious attack on Lee Smolin ...: The acceleration is caused by gravitons, and since gravitons don’t carry gravitational charge (only the Higgs-like field is charged) they are like the photons in the old gauge theory of U(1) electrodynamics and don’t interact with one another to cause the coupling to increase at short distances or high collision energies. Since the gravity coupling actually remains small at high energies and small distances, and since it is powering the cosmological acceleration, we can see why the mainstream assumption that gravity is enhanced by a factor of 1040 at the smallest distances causes the mainstream estimate of cosmological acceleration/dark energy to be too high (another error, albeit a smaller one, in the mainstream calculation is their assumption of the Planck scale as the grain size or cutoff wavelength instead of the black hole event horizon size, which is smaller and more meaningful physically than the bigger length given by Planck’s arbitrary dimensional analysis).
[Seattle PostGlobe - Top News] Seattle PostGlobe | News | International Affairs | When criminals ...: The British government, while criticising the Palestinian Hamas for firing rockets into southern Israel (token acts of feeble resistance to a vile, brutal and illegal occupation that have killed zero Israelis), conspicuously declines to criticise Israel for causing civilian casualties while the mainstream media all sing the chorus of Israeli propaganda about “self defence.” As hundreds of thousands of people all over the world came onto the streets to express outrage over the violence, police in London engaged in a systematic persecution of the demonstrators targeting young people from Muslim communities and the courts cooperated by severely sentencing those charged.
[Hot Air » Top Picks] Hot Air » Key Dem Rep says immigration reform doesn't have the ...: In 2009, Obama had planned to tackle immigration as his third big project, after ObamaCare and ObamaCap. Unfortunately, the health-care debate took far longer than Democrats planned, thanks in large part to an eruption of voter anger last summer over the sudden attempt to expand government control of the US health care system. The cap-and-trade bill is still languishing in the Senate after passing the House almost exactly a year ago, and is also so unpopular in the swing states of the Coal and Rust Belts that Democrats are just as reluctant to address it.

[Scobleizer] Why Facebook has never listened and why it definitely won't start ...: Eventually, a new social networking site will come along that listens to what users want from the site and when that day does eventually come, Facebook users will remember Zuckerberg and leave in droves. They will leave Facebook and avoid any future web venture Zuckerberg attaches himself to.
[BBC Blogs Network] BBC - Peston's Picks: BAE: Can't pay, would like to pay: How on earth do they think other multi nationals from say America, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, China, India and Russia do business with these regimes? If there was not an expectation that various officials, members of royal families, sponsors and high level government ministers did not expect a thick wedge of wonga in a brown envelop or a deposit to a Swiss bank account, does anybody with even one brain cell really think BAE Systems or any other contractor would contemplate such an act?

[FAIR Blog] FAIR Blog » Blog Archive » Action Alert: CNN Hires Erick Erickson: What do YOU say about his calling a White House spokesperson “Josef Goebbels?” How do YOU characterize his saying that “ugly feminists should return to their kitchens?” Even if you can find some way to rationalize these, what do YOU say about his calling Justice Souter a “goat-fucking child molester?” If CNN is so desperate to “compete” with Glenn Beck that it has to find somebody worse than him to fill the “shock” niche, it may be done for. How about this ” offer a really smart, well-spoken, persuasive commentator who actually knows something and can build an audience over time?
[Animal Rights] Animal Experimentation - Animal Rights - timesunion.com - Albany NY: I am a firm believer in use the weaker to help the stronger, I believe that’s part of the reason we are who we are today, with life expectancies reaching almost 80 years for the average human, opposed to 35 about a thousand years ago. It’s a sad reality but it’s often times the truth that humans get left behind in institutions, spending their entire lives in disability centers and being shipped back and forth to hospitals and clinics and almost never visited by family members, and those people who work in centers for the disabled are usually far from what you could call these peoples family.
[Bud Burrell - Front and Center] Bud Burrell's Blog: The two party system preached by our politicians is designed to wrap broad controls over the electorate irrespective if their political views. In most cases, each party is controlled by fringe elements whose principal concern is the continued propagation of their own power, which can only occur when the largest unit of American voters shifts support between the parties at elections.
[Johnblakey's Weblog] Busy busy busy: Only once, in all the Cabinet debates about nuclear weapons since the start of the Cold War, has the ethical question of their use been mentioned: in the post-Bush era it is likely to become more prominent.
