[Ethics Newsline®] The Glasgow Herald notes that while there apparently is great public concern about the environment and the ethics of the nation’s banking industry, there is little evidence that Scottish investors really are interested in putting money into ethical funds. A straw poll of investment advisers conducted by the Herald indicates little demand for green and ethical investments.

[Thought Leader] Thought Leader » Michael Trapido » How can Old Mutual defend the ...: Having held numerous policies with Old Mutual in Zimbabwe prior to 2002, I never received a single payout for my investiments. Old mutual received a lot of money from policyholders, but, because of the economic erosion of the zimdollar, they managed to get away with not paying out anything to their policyholders yet most of their investments where either in real estate or foreign currencies which were not affected by the economic destruction. How on earth did they manage to get away with this kind of robbery?

[Mahala] Uncle Bob Old Mutual | Mahala: Great article Andy, I just returned from a month in Zim, and I am surprised at the good feeling you still get up there. Bizarrely enough given the extent of mad BOB’s human right’s violations extending back to the massacres in Matabeleland to the slum clearances in 2007, they have gone beyond hate for him and they laugh at him for the senile old man that he is.

[This is Zimbabwe] This is Zimbabwe » Blog Archive » Old Mutual has failed ...: Old Mutual was possibly not criticised for their role during the Rhodesian days as far as I know, but old wrongs don’t make a right and they should not use the excuse that they bought these shares in the times of the Rhodesian regime. In fact, I would like an answer from OM to my more immediate question: “does that mean Old Mutual has a historical policy of supporting hate speech and giving voice to governments that oppress their own people?” Does Mayor Masunda think it is OK to make money (or in this case lose his shareholders’ money) from an organisation that daily denies the rights of the people of Zimbabwe to free speech?

[frogblog] Kiwisaver - ethical investment? | frogblog: Great to have waived this flag in front of the gov’t, but the whole concept of Socially Responsible/Ethical Investment all sounds good on paper but in reality it’s a different story…Many of these SRI/Ethical funds often include big global bank names (BNP Paribas, JP Morgan, Citigroup, Westpac etc ) who, make no mistake, are lending to sectors that wouldn’t qualify for entry into any SRI fund on their own merit. e.g If Westpac lends to British American Tobacco, then by investing in Westpac you’re indirectly supporting a tobacco company…

[This is Zimbabwe] This is Zimbabwe » Blog Archive » Petition Old Mutual to stop ...: My issue is with equating Old Mutual’s shareholding to funding Zimpapers operations. What the petition should be pushing for is OM to just end the relationship they have with Zimpapers on moral grounds or as I suggested earlier use that shareholding to lobby for editorial change rather than because they are funding or arming the state’s tools of repression.

[Felix Salmon] Reuters.com: One of the things I try to do as an ethics teacher is puzzle through newsworthy dust-ups like the Ben Stein firing and try to sort out the rights and wrongs with some care. I think that’s especially important because the language of ethics is frequently used by news managers to give themselves moral legitimacy when what they’re really doing is taking action to avoid institutional embarrassment, protect their brands, assert their authority””any number of reasons that may be perfectly valid, but which aren’t really related to ethics.
