[Educating the Good Citizen] Sustainable Development & Educating for Civic Character ...: delineation between character education and civic character. Being somewhat familiar with the ideals of character education, I found it to be a sound foundation in which to build their conception of civic character. I was particularly enamored with their citing of, among others, George Washington, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson and the vision that these colonial leaders attempted to offer in playing their role in the creation of this country. Berkowitz, Althof, and Jones describe the sentiments of our forefathers as important, stating “an enlightened citizenry is indispensible for the proper functioning of the republic. Self-government is not possible unless the citizens are educated sufficiently to enable them to exercise oversight”. I have long wondered if this view was pure in its infancy and has become tainted by more contemporary examples of wealth, power, greed, and corruption or if the world has long turned at the watch and warrant of the Western powers and this is simply another sales pitch sold to and bought by the masses. The development of civic character (if our aim is true democracy) would seem to be steeped in the tenants of Jefferson’s “aristocracy of virtue and talent” rather than the “aristocracy of wealth”

[Left Turns?] Transcript of Workshop: The past 10 or 15 years have witnessed a greater polarization between those countries with consolidating party systems (Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and even Mexico where the last electoral conflict was resolved institutionally not on the streets) and those where party systems are inchoate and in some cases eroding democracy (Colombia 1991, Peru 1990, Venezuela 1993, Bolivia mid 1990s, and Ecuador). In the first context, Left-wing parties have been “contaminated” by systemic features such as organized party competition, stronger links with civil society groups, and predictable voting patterns and policy preferences.

[Left Turns?] Report to the Peter Wall Institute of Advanced Studies: The papers presented in this section of the workshop addressed four issues: the ability of Left-wing politics to contextualize practices, to incorporate social citizenship into the agenda, to create budgets that respond to their constituencies, and to address criminal violence. Korovkin commented on the ways in which Arditis paper contextualizes Left discourses and practices, and she suggested that this is not a new issue in Latin America.
